Department of Polymer Engineering

Welcome to the Department of Polymer Engineering at National Textile University (NTU) Karachi Campus, dedicated to engineering education, innovation, and industrial development. The department traces its origins to the Plastics Technology Centre (PTC), established by the Government of Pakistan in 1986 with the support of UNIDO/UNDP and later upgraded through the cooperation of JICA, Japan. Building upon this strong legacy, NTU Karachi Campus continues to play a pioneering role in the development of Pakistan's polymer and plastics industry through quality education, research, and industry engagement.

Polymer Engineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing discipline that focuses on the design, processing, testing, and application of plastics, rubbers, composites, and advanced materials. These materials are essential to modern industries, including textile, marine, packaging, healthcare, automotive, construction, renewable energy, electronics, and consumer products. As industries continue to evolve, the demand for skilled polymer engineers is increasing both in Pakistan and across the globe.

Polymer Engineering program combines a strong foundation in polymer science and engineering. Students gain hands-on experience through well-equipped laboratories, industrial-scale processing machinery, and industry-oriented projects under the guidance and supervision of experienced and Ph.D. qualified faculty. The curriculum is designed as per PEC guidelines and in close alignment with current industrial needs, enabling graduates to develop the technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and professional skills required for successful careers.

If you are passionate about science, technology, engineering, and innovation, Polymer Engineering offers an exciting pathway to a rewarding professional career. The field provides excellent opportunities for professional growth and advancement in manufacturing, product development, research and development, quality assurance, technical services, and industrial management. Graduates are employed by leading national and multinational organizations and pursue higher studies at prestigious universities in Europe, North America, Asia, and other parts of the world.

At the Department of Polymer Engineering, we are committed to developing competent, innovative, and industry-ready engineers who contribute to technological advancement and sustainable development. Guided by our belief that "Discipline fuels innovation, and innovation leads the path to excellence," we invite you to join us and become part of a profession that shapes the materials of the future and transforms lives around the world.

The discipline of Polymer Engineering involves studying relationships that exist between the structure and properties of polymeric materials. An understanding of structure-properties correlations develops a better understanding of designing & fabrication of polymeric products. Our BS Polymer Engineering, four-year degree program (eight semesters) explores the structure, characterization, properties, and selection of the full range of polymeric materials used in industry today. You will be taught by the research-active lecturers having considerable expertise in their fields. Industrial Internship is a mandatory degree completion requirement, along with Final-Year Design Projects, which are usually industry-based, providing an opportunity & develop skills in students to apply engineering principles learned during the Program. Seminars conducted by subject experts provide an exposure to the latest technology trends in the field of polymers.

The major focus of our program is on developing concepts and skills of students through classroom learning, laboratory work, internship, and industrial tours. Moreover, we focus strongly on industrial relevance and application throughout the course, as one of the main objectives behind the start of this program was to provide trained manpower to the polymer sector in the country.

Our program is accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), enabling our graduates to go on to achieve registered/professional Chartered Engineering status.

Mission:

The Department of Polymer Engineering at NTU Karachi campus is committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation in polymer engineering. Our mission is to cultivate a dynamic learning and research environment that fosters technological advancements, sustainable solutions, and industry-driven innovations in polymer engineering.

Salient features:

  • The program has a flexible course structure with diverse activities, bringing together excellence in teaching and research.
  • The program curriculum is fully flexible to be modified to keep pace with the rapidly changing production technologies.
  • A course structure is designed in consultation with industry, ensuring that your degree will be highly valued by employers.
  • A range of national and international placement opportunities with major companies.
  • A high student-to-teacher ratio means students receive excellent individual attention.
  • A final year research project of your choice using state-of-the-art facilities, in collaboration with leading Polymer industries, providing a grounding for working in R & D or going on to higher study.

Career opportunities:

Our graduates are highly sought after by employers, and all our graduates either find employment in industry, start their own business, or go on to higher-level study at the end of their degree. Careers include research and development, process engineers, management positions, and technical roles within both large multinationals and smaller businesses. Other graduates choose to apply their technical and analytical skills in research and development or go on to higher-level study (e.g., towards a PhD).

Teaching and learning:

The course contains a balance of lectures and practical work, accompanied by regular tutorials that will help you with your learning through guided practice and instant feedback. Practical work and tutorials are often carried out in teams, which not only aid your learning but also help you develop valuable intra-personal skills. You will also benefit from small-group tutorials, during which you can discuss any course-related matters and others like career choice or how to improve your attractiveness to employers.

Alongside the dedicated polymer engineering teaching, we also provide formal teaching in communication and transferable skills, including management, organizational behavior, computing, and presentation techniques, etc.
