Department of Applied Sciences

About the Department

The Department of Applied Sciences at NTU is playing an important role in developing the future textile engineers for the industry. The role of the department is evident from the fact that the foundation of all technical and major courses is developed through the courses taught under this department Not only technical but also personal growth and development is one of the most important aspects of human life, especially when one has to maintain one's pace with the current and modern needs of the job. To deal with this aspect, the department aims to provide students with solid foundation that will prepare them to adjust successfully in their careers.

Undergraduate Program

CH-1001 Applied Chemistry 4(3,3): This course provides and comprehensive understanding of properties of liquids, solutions, water, acids and bases, oxidizing and reducing agents exclusively used in textile industry. Through this course students would be able to understand the kinetics and thermodynamics of reactions. A detailed study of surface chemistry is also included to understand various processes involved in textile industry.

CH-1002 Organic Chemistry 4(3,3): The objective of this course is to give the students a detailed knowledge of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives including alkyl halides, amines, oils, fats and heterocyclic compounds with special emphasis on their applications in textile industry. It will enhance the understanding of different chemical reactions for structural modifications of chemicals for improved properties.

PH 1003 Applied Physics 4(3,3): This course is intended for student majoring in Textile Wet Processing. The goals of the course are: Basic Physics Knowledge of mechanics, fluid mechanics, light & optics, electricity and magnetism; including
phenomenology, theories & techniques, concept and generalized principles. Problem Solving - ability to ask questions, to obtain solution by qualitative & quantitative reasoning, and by experimental investigation. Connection – understanding connection of physics to other discipline.

PH-1001 Physics for Engr & Sc- I 4(3,3): An inquiry based two semester physics course intended for students interested in YMD, FMD, and GMT. This course will introduce rigorous qualitative, quantitative approach, and techniques to study physics concepts. Topics includes, laws of mechanics which are primarily based on measurements of space, time and quantities related to them. These quantities form the basis of all mechanical systems and this course offers a mathematical understanding of laws of mechanics. Motion is examined in two or three dimensions and concepts of momentum, friction, work, energy, moments of inertia, elasticity, and conservation are studied in details. Other topics include fluid mechanics and wave phenomenon.

PH-1002 Physics for Engr & Sc - II 4(3,3): Second part of the inquiry based rigorous physics course. This course will develop conceptual and analytic skills solving a broad range of problems in optics, electricity and magnetism. Topics include nature and propagation of light, geometric optics, optical instruments, interference and diffraction of light with application. Electricity and magnetism are the foundations on which modern industrial technology is built. Topics include basic concepts related to charge, electric field, and electric potential. From these concepts the behavior of dielectric, Gauss law, motion of charge particle in electric and magnetic field, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law, Lenz’s law and Maxwell’s equation are discussed with application.

Applied sciences laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Electro techniques, Computer,) are vital component of NTU establishment. These labs provide full support to students to corroborate the Knowledge gained in the theory classes. Through lab work, students acquire understanding of basic principles, experimental and analytic skills that are essential for Engineering Degree Programs. The experiments in these labs are so designed to help students to develop a broad array of skills, i.e. data analysis, measuring accuracy techniques, and direct observations. Presently there are three basic and one specialized laboratory catering the requirements for applied sciences courses.
